I was moulding clay at the weekend when God stopped me in my tracks and said “This is how I need your heart to be. When it is hardened it can shatter and chip and crack. I need to be able to mould your heart in order to use you. I can’t use a heart that chips and shatters.”

There are times recently when my heart feels as though it has crumbled a little or cracked in places and I wonder how I can guard against the pain. I went to church later in the day having heard God speak to me about having a mouldable heart, so to speak, and the message was all about God using difficult situations and difficult people to soften your heart, to carve out the decay so that he can use you to forgive, show mercy and be humble. The preacher said that when God puts a call on your life he challenges you with difficulties to refine you.

I believe we all have a call in many different ways and that as christians we forget that it means we have to take up a cross. Jesus bore insult, rejection and betrayal with a grace that we can only hope to achieve and his words were “forgive them for they know not what they have done.” We forget that many times when we perceive injustices, whether in our own lives, or on a global scale the words apply they know not what they have done.

I pray that God will soften my heart so that no insult will be too great to bare, no rejection too painful to surmount and no betrayal too crushing to move beyond. He didn’t forgive us so that we would just tolerate difficult people, he sent his son to die the most torturous death so that we would love, so that we would show mercy and so that we would become humble enough to look beyond our pain and be Christ in people’s lives.

“Something has got to give ‘cos I can’t wait to live”………..says Sara Bareilles

So how far do we have to go to get to God. There’s no distance except our stubbornness, disappointment and unwillingness to just sit in his presence. This year has been the loneliest of my life but you know God is still here and we don’t have to travel to get to him.

There are days when I can be positive and remember that he is an awesome God but there are days like today when I just need a padded cell to melt down where noone can hear me. Ever get those days or is it just me?

The thing is we are often waiting to just live when we are supposed to be living in today, living as though it were our last. If it were our last would we wonder if there were any words of love left unspoken? Would we do things that otherwise we might just shelve?

No guilt in life, no fear in death,
This is the power of Christ in me;
From life’s first cry to final breath.
Jesus commands my destiny.
No power of hell, no scheme of man,
Can ever pluck me from His hand;
Till He returns or calls me home,
Here in the power of Christ I’ll stand.

As I listen to the lyrics of  ‘In Christ Alone’ the vulnerability that I feel at the moment for many reasons is washed away. Who can argue with the words that the power of Christ is in you? The power that conquered death, conquered sin and is ours to live out daily. Our days are not about how we feel but about who he is. We are designed and created to worship our maker.

Jesus commands our destiny because we invited him into our lives but in our daily walk we need reminders of his awesome power, a power that we lose sight of at times in the cares and worries of the day. It is in Christ’s power that we stand and no power of hell or scheme of man can take us from him.

A love story between the maker and his precious child, a passion for him while his power is at work in us, a purpose to our time on earth and an eternal promise of heaven.

Great is the Lord and worthy of our praise. If you do nothing else today PRAISE HIM.

‘The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing’

Zephaniah 3:17 is a verse a dear friend shared with me some years ago. She is now with her maker and has left an irreplaceable gap in many of our lives. I miss her all the time, I miss her wisdom, her questions, her passion for God, her gentleness, her love and her incredible loyalty and ability to reach out.

Do you ever fall into the trap of thinking that people don’t need you or wouldn’t miss you if you didn’t call or meet up? Do you ever think that your presence won’t be needed at church or that your family don’t really need your words or affection? ……Don’t! You are absolutely unique…….you are fearfully and wonderfully made by the Lord of heaven and earth and he rejoices over you with singing, he takes great delight in you; yes YOU.

Life can make us feel weary and burdened at times but we have all been created with unique and wonderful gifts and no other person can fill that gap.  When God puts you in a family or gives you a family of your own, when he gives you friendships, employers, a church, he puts you there for a role that no other person can fill. He designed it that you are where you are now with the people you know because of who you are and what you can give to those people through him.

Know that when your role in any situation it tiring or when you are unsure of things remember that HE is mighty to save and that he will take great delight in YOU.

He is Lord of Lords, King of Kings and he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing because he loves you completely and utterly. He has designed you for a purpose and there is nothing you can do to make him love you more. The maker of heaven and earth rejoices over you with singing every single day.
